Competition Guidelines

 

 

Guidelines for Competition 2025

 

  1. Applicant MUST reside in Jackson County or study in Jackson County. This competition is offered to students in grade six through twelve. 

  2. Applicant must be a solo performer (with accompaniment as required by the score.) Recorded accompaniment is only allowed for Dance auditions and Special needs.

  1. The performer is encouraged to memorize the music, but it is not required for participation.

  2. Repeats are to be omitted as well as long accompaniment-only passages.

  3. Two copies (at least one original) of the music are to be provided for the judges with measures numbered on both copies.  Any non-original copy is to be shredded/destroyed after the audition to protect copyright law.

  1. Application must be signed by parent/guardian AND the student’s music or dance instructor.

  1. Two pieces of contrasting style are to be performed to show a range of the performer’s abilities.  If the piece is a concerto, contrasting movements from the same concerto are accepted. 

  1. Award funds are intended for enrichment study. Private lessons (with a different instructor) will be considered but must be approved by the committee within 2 days of the request.  If you cannot find a suitable summer camp or workshop for your field of interest, please submit an alternative activity which could fulfill the intention of this award.  For example;  college workshops or short term study with a college faculty specialist would be acceptable.  The funds are to be used within a year, unless a special request is submitted and accepted by the committee.

  1. Upon completion of the enrichment activity, a written report evaluating the relative merits of the chosen enrichment funded by the award is to be submitted to the Award Committee Chairperson.

  1. It is expected that an award winner will perform their pieces at a special program for the  Jackson Tuesday Musicale on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 3pm at First Presbyterian Church.  If this time and date are not possible, the student is to notify the committee and other options will be considered.

  1. An applicant is not eligible to audition after winning two times.

**You will be contacted by March 17, 2025 with the time you are to perform.   The try-outs are held at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm on March 19, 2025.
